Leveraging Expertise in Nigeria

For more than 110 years, American Leprosy Missions has specialized in providing expert care to people suffering from leprosy-related disabilities. But leprosy isn’t the only disease that can lead to lifelong disabilities. There are millions of people at risk of similar disabilities caused by other neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).

So, thanks to your support, we are leveraging our expertise and expanding our ministry in two regions of Nigeria. You are helping us bring compassionate care to people affected by leprosy, Buruli ulcer, lymphatic filariasis and other disabling NTDs.

Using Ten Steps training materials developed by our staff, health workers, affected people and their families are being equipped to manage and prevent disabilities.

Health workers are on the front lines of the work to bring life-changing cure and care to suffering people. Each health worker has the opportunity to impact hundreds of people. Because of your partnership, our staff and partners are training health workers how to:

• detect and treat NTDs
• care for wounds
• manage current disabilities
• prevent further disabilities

Thanks to your generous gifts, we are also conducting self-care training for 150 people affected by NTDs and their immediate relatives. Self-care gives people the opportunity to focus on their abilities, rather than their disabilities. They learn to control the disease, rather than letting it control them. As people develop the self-confidence to overcome adversity, they are empowered to take charge of their lives.

The change is truly amazing.
