Leading Global Health Organization Welcomes New Vice President

(Greenville, S.C., March 20, 2019) — The South Carolina-based organization working to cure and care for people with leprosy and related diseases is adding to its staff with the hiring of a vice president of special initiatives to oversee the AIM Initiative, a program of American Leprosy Missions. Joining the team is Stefanie Weiland who comes with twenty years of international experience in economic and community development, organizational management and health care delivery.

“Stefanie brings extensive leadership experience in global health and development to our team,” says Bill Simmons, president and CEO. “She has a successful track record of scaling international programs and managing diverse teams. We look forward to having her drive the AIM Initiative disease mapping and management program as it grows to serve the millions of people affected by neglected tropical diseases.”

Weiland joins American Leprosy Missions from LifeNet International where she served as executive director, managing a global team and scaling impact from 10 clinics in one country in Africa to 130 clinics in four countries, improving the quality of health care delivered in six million patient visits to date.

“I am looking forward to joining this dynamic and growing organization on April 1st, and working with its stellar team to build on the momentum of the AIM Initiative to break barriers to health access for people suffering from neglected tropical diseases,” says Weiland. “This innovative initiative has so much potential to make local health systems work for the people who need it most.”

Prior to LifeNet International, Weiland progressed to leadership in several U.S. government and non-government roles, working on a range of development and humanitarian issues including post-tsunami recovery in Asia, post-war economic and small business development in Kosovo, public health work in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Ebola and other outbreak preparedness in the Great Lakes Region of Africa. She also has experience managing field leaders from 12 countries with Greater Europe Mission, leading local capacity building and community service in Japan with Asian Access, and conducting research and strategic planning with Rahab Ministries in Thailand.

Weiland received her Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and her Master of Science in Development Studies from The London School of Economics. She has also studied at the U.S. Air Force Academy and received a certificate in development management from the Monterey Institute of International Studies. Weiland is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Public Health from The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She speaks French and Japanese. Weiland will be based in Washington, D.C.
