Research Associate in Molecular & Structural Biology Joins American Leprosy Missions Team

The United States’ largest anti-leprosy organization is expanding its expertise in leprosy research. Joining American Leprosy Missions’ work of bringing hope and healing to people suffering from leprosy and related diseases is Sundeep Chaitanya of India.

Chaitanya is a member of the American Leprosy Missions program team and serves as research associate in the Structural Biology and Biocomputing Group in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge in England.

“We are thrilled to have Sundeep as part of our team,” said Darren Schaupp, vice president of programs. “His innovative thinking and deep expertise in biological sciences is being applied in cutting-edge research for leprosy at the Cambridge University’s Structural Biology and Biocomputing Group. In addition, Sundeep is passionate about ensuring our research initiatives are developed into practical interventions which improve the lives of people affected by Neglected Tropical Diseases. This makes him a great fit with our organization’s focus on translational research.”

Chaitanya comes to the American Leprosy Missions team with seven years of laboratory-based research experience in immunology and molecular biology of leprosy. Most recently he served as research officer at the Schieffelin Institute of Health Research & Leprosy Centre in Karigiri, India. Prior to that he was a senior research fellow and research officer at the Stanley Browne Laboratory of The Leprosy Mission Community Hospital in New Delhi, India for four years. Chaitanya has a Ph.D. in Health Sciences (Immunology and Molecular Biology of Leprosy) from Stanley Browne Laboratory which is affiliated with the Martin Luther Christian University in Shillong, India. He and his family are based in Cambridge, England.
